Who are the Hashira?
If you know and love Demon Slayer, then you should know what I’m talking about. If not, well…I’ll tell you anyway. The Hashira are the nine most feared and most powerful combatants in The Demon Slayer Corps. As such, they are the Corps’s top-ranking, most elite warriors who serve a pivotal role in the war against Muzan Kibutsuji. For the hell of it, as a fan of both Demon Slayer and Harry Potter, let’s sort these guys into Hogwarts Houses, not just the current Hashira but also former Hashira. 1. Giyu Tomioka (Water Hashira) — Ravenclaw
The very first Demon Slayer that Tanjiro meets is Giyu Tomioka, the Water Hashira and a fan favorite. But he’s also a little difficult to sort. Which is why he gets to go first. He’s a very reserved person (though he has a complex about what other people think about him) and has a strong sense of justice. He has no patience for people who throw away their lives and don’t know their limitations. It’s clear from his first appearance that Giyu is all work and no play. He always holds a no-nonsense and simple approach to his duties: Slay demons and protect humans.
Giyu is definitely a Ravenclaw. He’s very sharp and smart. He also has a small bit of Hufflepuff and Gryffindor because his actions are motivated by discipline, loyalty, and justice. Aside from being reserved and analytical, Giyu is also known for his trustworthiness with good judgment and he is also merciful and kind. Even though he shows no hesitation when killing demons. Giyu spared Nezuko and even vouched for her’s and Tanjiro’s situation in front of the other Hashira. Giyu is the typical calm and collected anime character. He is extremely stoic and not really the talking type but proves to deeply care about his loved ones and care for other people. I believe his practiced stoicism (which successfully masks his personality) is as much a self-imposed punishment as it is a defense mechanism. To me, this is a reflection of his dedication to justice and discipline. On that fateful day, when he first met Tanjiro, he never knew, then, that his decision to spare Nezuko would ultimately lead the Demon Slayer Corps to victory.
2. Kyojuro Rengoku (Flame Hashira) — Gryffindor
The Flame Hashira, Kyojuro Rengoku is one of the more eccentric members of the Pillars, and that’s saying a lot. He’s always cheerful and enthusiastic about his duties, and a lifetime of strict practice and discipline has made him an extraordinary Demon Slayer.
Rengoku is definitely a Gryffindor. In fact, he’s the most Gryffindor member of the Hashira. He’s brave and heroic but also caring, kind, enthusiastic, and responsible, and he values connections with other people, which he demonstrated during the Demon Train Arc when he protects over 200 people from being killed and eaten by demons, even holding back one of the Upper Moon demons and he died a hero. Charismatic and principled, Kyojuro is an honorable warrior who’s adhered to his mother’s moral code since he was a child - the most significant being his belief that those who were born strong have a duty to protect the weak. Plus, he has an affinity for scarlet and gold. Godric Gryffindor would be proud.
3. Mitsuri Kanroji (Love Hashira) — Hufflepuff
Mitsuri has the warmest and most gentle personality of the bunch and just genuinely cares for others. She certainly lives up to her moniker as The Love Hashira, mostly because she constantly compliments people inside her head, and is incredibly kind-hearted, passionate, cheerful, pure, humorous, and emotional, but she’s also very brave. She gets shy and flustered easily but does not shy away from the battle at all. In fact, she is probably one of the toughest Hashira there is. Mitsuri is a Hufflepuff, the only Hogwarts House that seems perfectly befitting of her title as the Love Hashira. Mitsuri was also one of the only Hashira to accept Tanjiro and Nezuko and fully support them.
She’s always kind and gentle to other people, despite being very shy, and showcases a great amount of dedication and loyalty to the Demon Slayers’ cause and her friends. She can get rather excitable, grabbing her friends for a big group hug after their decisive victory over Gyokko and Hantengu. She’s passionate about life in general and treats her fellow Hashira as if they were her family. Mitsuri’s determination stems from seeking a man stronger than herself to marry. To anime viewers and manga readers, she is undeniably one of the funniest characters in the series. You know, I could have put her in Gryffindor, but I decided not to.
4. Obanai Iguro (Serpent Hashira) — Slytherin
Obanai is very strict, ruthless, and harsh and shows no regard for those who do not abide by the code of conduct of the Demon Slayer Corps. He seems like the shy guy of the bunch. And he is, but he also is incredibly fierce and will do anything for those he cares about. Obanai is the Serpent Hashira, and he has deep-rooted feelings for Mitsuri Kanroji. To everyone other than her, he is cold and determined to carry out the Demon Slayer mission, to rid the world of demons. Obanai is fairly loyal to the Demon Slayer Corps, but he demands it back in return.
Iguro is probably the most Machiavellian of the Hashira. He’s cunning, sly, shrewd, ambitious, calculating, unscrupulous, self-preserving, and very resourceful and he often thinks that people are not trying as hard as they should in battle, and is cold to almost everyone. His relationship and feeling for Mitsuri though show the other side of his personality. He has a horrible problem with self-loathing due to his family and his own appearance but constantly proves that he is trying to better himself. Obanai has an incredible sense of determination, continuing the fight against Muzan even after he is completely blinded and covered in wounds. His ability to protect Giyu and Tanjiro throughout the fight and thanking Tanjiro for helping him see proves that Obanai can drop grudges and become friendlier with people he was rude to prior. Obanai walks the walk and talks the talk of an ambitious Slytherin. Actually, he’s the only Slytherin Hashira. As a matter of fact, he’s one of the few Demon Slayers to be sorted into Slytherin. He seems to have an affinity for green and silver.
5. Shinobu Kocho (Insect Hashira) — Ravenclaw
My favorite character.
Shinobu, the Insect Hashira, is a rather funny character because she definitely displays a different personality than she had in the past, that of a Gryffindor. She was bolder and braver than she is today, but her personality completely changed after her sister’s death. Shinobu initially comes off as laid-back and enjoys teasing others. She always has a smile on her face regardless of the situation, which sometimes makes her look totally scary, especially when she’s being sadistic. This is what makes her one of the most feared and most dangerous members of the Demon Slayer Corps. She is terrifying.
Like many Ravenclaws, Shinobu is very intelligent and clever, and as the series goes on she gets to showcase that increasingly, and she has great knowledge when it comes to medicine and poison, which proved to be of great use to the Demon Slayer Corps and gave them a huge advantage over Muzan. She displays an inventive, elegant, versatile, and strategic outlook that is on full display in her fighting style that allows her to stand out from the rest of the Hashira. Shinobu doesn’t have the physical strength to decapitate a demon, so she had to find another way to be able to kill demons. To compensate for her lack of strength, Shinobu has her blade coated in wisteria poison, and now, she only needs a few quick slashes to kill a demon and she also makes up for her lack of strength with her speed, making her the fastest of the nine.
Shinobu is also very creative, which she gets to showcase through the medical care she can provide as a pharmacologist. Even when she has limited resources, Shinobu can overcome the odds to help people and that type of creativity and intelligence is a perfect Ravenclaw mix. She’s always quick on her feet and sharp as a tack. Like her older sister, she is very kind, laidback, merciful, and generous. During the Hashira’s trial, Shinobu was the only one who wanted to listen to Tanjiro’s side of the story and she was the only one who was kind to him by offering him water and allowed him and Nezuko to stay at her house. To entertain herself, she likes to pick on Giyu and be sarcastic towards him, another trait that is truly Ravenclaw. Although he maintains a cold distant stance, Shinobu is the one who has the best relationship with him. She says that Giyu is disliked by other people, which is pretty mean. But in truth, she actually cares for him.
To defeat Doma, the Upper Moon #2, she ingeniously altered her body by pumping it with poison. She is successful in saturating her body with the undetectable poison that has completely merged with her body’s own cell structures, including those of her blood and internal organs — all the way down to the very tips of her fingernails. And if not for her intelligence, wit, creativity, knowledge, and her great sacrifice, the Demon Slayer Corps would have never defeated Muzan Kibutsuji.
6. Tengen Uzui (Sound Hashira) — Ravenclaw
This…..was a tough one. Tengen Uzui, the ninja Hashira of sound is another super cool character in the series. He starts out proving that he has a deep love for anything and everything “flamboyant,” which is why his character design is so done up with jewelry and makeup. He’s a very eccentric person. Although it is heavily implied, Tengen likely has self-esteem issues and deep regrets under his outgoing front. During the battle with Gyutaro, he compared himself to his fellow Hashira, (Muichiro Tokito, Gyomei Himejima, Kyojuro Rengoku) for having natural talent. He also thinks that he is not capable of nurturing others like Rengoku or Shinobu. Uzui’s story was also arguably the best character development within the Hashira group. He made me laugh the most out of any of the Hashira and he has plenty of witty remarks that were pretty great, too. For his eccentricity and wit alone, Tengen would feel most welcome in Ravenclaw.
7. Gyomei Himejima (Stone Hashira) — Hufflepuff
Gyomei, embodies the gentle giant archetype, being surprisingly soft-spoken and sensitive, despite his intimidating appearance. He is also shown to be quite pious, carrying his prayer beads at all times and offering prayers in poignant situations.
Though he maintains a fairly reserved disposition, Gyomei harbors a very objective and somewhat suspicious view of the people around him, owing to his experiences before becoming a Demon Slayer. He is ever-cognizant of what others, particularly children or those younger than him, are capable of if given the opportunity. Because of his doubtful nature, it can take a while for Gyomei to completely accept and trust others. When he does open up and let others in, he is unwavering in his commitment to them. He can get overly emotional and is particularly sensitive when children are involved.
He takes a long time to warm up to and trust others. Normally, he behaves like a gentle giant and is actually rather sweet. However, his initial response to people doesn’t make him the most likable right off the bat and gives those he interacts with a bad first impression. Gyomei is a Hufflepuff.
8. Muichiro Tokito (Mist Hashira) — Ravenclaw
Like many Ravenclaws, Muichiro relies strictly on logic to resolve his missions. He believes that emotion should not play a part in Demon Slaying. He’s not really caring about anything going on around him, the truth is he’s quite air-headed and always daydreaming about something else. Despite his logical ways, Muichiro can sometimes be seen to act in an illogical manner, often wandering off on his own or getting lost in his own mind. But he’s also very smart. Despite these quirks, he’s effective as soon as it comes to defeating demons. He usually thinks of himself and is incredibly logical, never acting on emotion, making him a perfect candidate for Ravenclaw.
9. Sanemi Shinazugawa (Wind Hashira) — Gryffindor
Everyone loves the angry-for-no-reason characters in anime and Sanemi Shinazugawa (and his brother, Genya) is no exception. He’s known for being obtuse, ruthless, quick to anger, and somewhat hard to please and he is a super fiery hothead. He’s abrasive, intimidating, stubborn, blunt, impulsive, reckless, and hot-blooded. He’s so aggressive and menacing in nature that it’s almost scary. And he is fucking terrifying!! Because of this, Sanemi represents a more aggressive and savage side of Gryffindor, with Slytherin coming in second place. He has lost so many people in his life, that it was as though he built a wall around himself. He’s so stubborn and has a hard time admiring when he was wrong. Even when Sanemi is launched out of the battle against Muzan, he displays undeniable courage, bravery, and determination, like his fellow Hashira. Sanemi understands the power of fear and he knows how to use it to his advantage. He’s the Demon Slayer that everyone fears for a reason. Even the demons themselves.
10. Kanae Kocho (Flower Hashira) — Hufflepuff
Unlike her little sister, Shinobu, who is a Ravenclaw, Kanae Kocho is a Hufflepuff. Kanae was one of the few mentally stable and idealistic Demon Slayers, regularly flaunting a beautiful smile on her face. Kanae was recognized amongst the Hashira for her kind, laidback, generous personality. One notable act of kindness she did in her life was rescuing Kanao from slavery and adopting her. She always makes sure to take care of her sisters. She deeply hoped that the world would get to a place where humans and demons could live together in peace, despite their shared history of bloodshed.
