Another is a Halloween tradition for me. This anime combines both a terrifying story and violence that is not for those with a weak stomach. It has its fair share of notable and shocking moments, gore, and clever twists that you’ll never see coming. It’s scary as hell and it has some great deaths. So with that being said, let’s take a look at the top 10 best deaths from this amazing and terrifying anime and dissect them one by one. It incorporates a lot of twists and turns. You think that you know what is happening but you really don’t. I think very intelligent people who have not seen this anime would really like to try and solve the mystery behind the puzzle of this anime and figure out what is really happening. I will also do my best to get the videos of these deaths the best I can. Just a quick warning that there is lots of violence and gore on this list.

VIEWER DISCRETION IS ADVISED!!

10. Ikuo Takabayashi

Cause of death: Heart attack

Poor guy.

Ikuo is a rather quiet boy, but he seems to get along with the rest of the class. He reveals in “Rough Sketch” that he wants to be a runner, but he has a heart condition that makes that dream impossible. He also shows great courage — he alone is willing to tell Kouichi Sakakibara the reason why everyone was ignoring him and Mei, even though he knows what would likely happen if he did. In “Build Limbs”, when Kouichi asks him and Mochizuki to walk home with him, Ikuo is willing to tell him the truth. Before he could reveal anything, however, he immediately had a heart attack and died. He is one of the “Deaths of June.”

9. Tomohiko Kazami

Cause of death: Died from head hemorrhage inflicted by Izumi

Honestly, this guy got what he deserved.

In Episode 12, he begins targeting his classmates, killing Kyouko Kaneki and Aki Matsui by stabbing them from behind. After murdering Aki, he encountered Kouichi, who was infuriated by the senseless deaths. Undisturbed by his actions, Tomohiko simply attacked Kouichi next, accusing him of being the extra, but equally furious as he held Kouichi responsible for Yukari’s death. Just before he could deal the final blow to Kouichi, however, he was killed by Izumi, who hit him in the head with an iron rod. Having already encountered Tomohiko’s victims, Izumi was furious, declaring he didn’t deserve to live, and coldly taunted Tomohiko, telling him he could keep Yukari company as he didn’t deserve to live.

8. Junta Nakao

Cause of death: Believed shredded up by a speedboat; later thought to have been a cerebral aneurysm before the speedboat hit him.

In “Hair Stand”, he went with Kouichi and the others to meet Katsumi Matsunaga, as part of his attempts to help Izumi with the countermeasures. Junta, however, was ill from the beginning, though by the time the group went to the beach to relax, he seemed to have mostly recovered, though he spent most of the day asleep in the shade. When it was time to leave, a sudden gust of wind blew Takako’s volleyball into the ocean. Junta volunteered to recover it for his friend, but before he’d gone halfway he began to have trouble swimming. Naoya first noticed their classmate was in danger, and he, Kouichi, and Katsumi rushed into the water to save him. They were, unfortunately, too late, as a passing speedboat struck Junta in the water and eviscerated him. The violence of his death shocked the group, especially Takako, who was devastated by her friend’s horrific end. It also shocked Katsumi out of his PTSD, allowing him to remember where he’d hidden his tape regarding the 1983 calamity.

While it was thought the boat killed him (meaning the curse had spread beyond Yomiyama), it was later revealed in “Body Paint” (by Chibiki) that before leaving for the beach, he hit his head on the stairs at home back in Yomiyama, resulting in an aneurysm (hence his car sickness), which burst as he swam after the ball. Junta was dead before the boat hit his body.

7. Yumi Ogura

Cause of death: Neck broken after falling from a window, body bent at an unnatural and awkward angle

Honestly, this is my favorite death. Not because of how quick and sudden it was, but because of how scary it was.

In “Makeup”, Yumi heard the tape played by her countermeasures partner, Takako. She was shocked and enraged at the news. Taking a knife from her room, she set out to kill Mei, claiming her actions were to avenge her brother. Driven by revenge, the normally quiet Yumi led the hunt for Mei and Kouichi, forcing Kouichi to hit her, knocking her back into Kyouko and making both girls fall, something Kouichi apologized for as he ran away.

Furious, Yumi and the others continued pursuing the two into one of the inn’s rooms. Yumi ordered her fellow students to step aside before kicking the door in and following Mei and Kouichi onto a slippery window ledge. While attempting to kill Mei with the knife, Yumi leaned too far as she swung her knife and lost her balance, falling to the ground and breaking her neck. On impact, she was killed instantly. Her body bent at an unnatural and very awkward angle.

6. Aya Ayano

Cause of death: Aya died falling from a precipice along with her parents, after trying to flee Yomiyama

Poor thing. She was so sweet. Probably the most innocent character on the show.

Driving along a mountain road, the family Ayano had almost escaped when several loose rocks fell off the mountain, one impacting their car’s windshield. Aya’s father was in the right front seat and presumably driving, and lost control of the vehicle and plunged over the side of a precipice. The student gossip at the beginning of “Glass Eye” stated there were no survivors, suggesting that Aya and her parents are killed instantly or in the hospital despite all the efforts of the doctors trying to save them.

And now….For the top 5. Shit’s about to get intense here.

5. Sanae Mizuno

Cause of death: Slammed headfirst into the floor of a collapsing elevator, body crushed by elevator crash.

In “Put Flesh”, she called him to ask if Mei existed, since her brother claimed she didn’t in a horrified manner while returning from the rooftop through the elevator. While she was talking to Kouichi about Mei, the elevator’s motor started to spark and malfunction, and suddenly the cable snapped causing the elevator to fall. Sanae is slammed into the elevator floor head-first, and she is crushed when the elevator collapses. This incident leads to her being one of the “Deaths of June”.After her death, Kouichi is called in by detectives in his school to ask him a few questions about her death. Kouichi even questions if he is a suspect, but the detectives assure it was an accident, as he was the last person to talk to Sanae as her cell phone was found in the damage and was looked at.

(meanwhile on the Muppet Show theater balcony)
Statler: That was unfortunate.
Waldorf: Yeah, that situation quickly ELEVATED!
Statler: And then she DROPPED DEAD!
Both: D’OH-HO-HO-HO-HO-HO!

4. Takako Sugiura

Cause of death: Strangled to death by cables after trying to kill Mei Misaki

In “Makeup”, Takako revealed to Izumi she was in elementary school with someone called “Misaki”, who did not wear an eyepatch. Later on, a commotion in the main hall caused Izumi to leave Takako alone so she could go investigate. Upon encountering Mei and Koichi, the trio heard Takako scream. Returning to the room, Izumi, Koichi, and Mei check on her, the trio finds the girls’ room covered in blood and no sign of their friend. The group assumes the worst: someone had attacked Takako and killed her.

But Takako reappeared later, very much alive but covered in blood and carrying a knife, with one of her hands bandaged, her sanity having deserted her. After expressing relief that Izumi was still alive, Takako commented she would prefer not to live if the other girl died, before attacking Mei. Only Koichi’s intervention protected her. Takako fled to the inn’s radio room and broadcast the tape Mochizuki found, telling everyone that Mei was the dead one and asking them to kill her. Izumi, hearing the broadcast and realizing Takako wasn’t in her right mind, hurried to find her, leaving Kouichi to protect Mei.

Takako reappeared in the stairwell after the explosion, stabbing a distracted Koichi in the arm to immobilize him, before explaining she didn’t plan to kill him because Izumi “seems fond” of him. Laughing hysterically, she then attacked Mei a second time, only to become entangled in a bundle of electrical cables and strangle herself, much to Koichi and Mei’s horror.

Izumi arrives immediately after and sees Mei and Koichi standing underneath the dead body of her friend. Drawing the wrong conclusion and heartbroken by her friend’s death, Izumi vowed to kill Mei in revenge.

3. Izumi Akazawa

Cause of death: Impaled by multiple glass shards and pieces of wood

When Izumi finally gets a hold of Mei in the final episode, Kouchi knocks Izumi off of her then restraining her to prevent her from attacking Mei. Feeling the emotion of both anger and sadness she knee-jabs him in the groin then hits him with a metal rod causing him to fall backward on Mei. Tears in her eyes, she shouts at him saying why he was protecting Mei and that all she wanted to do was protect him and everyone else. Asking if he had some sort of a death wish, she attempted to kill Kouchi, but at that moment, lightning strikes. The lightning shatters the hall’s giant window, and large glass shards are sent flying towards them. Izumi ends up being skewered against the wall by the glass shards. Kouichi, shocked, removes her from the wall. While lying on the floor bleeding, Izumi tells Kouichi that they had met before, one and a half years ago. She was upset over the loss of her brother and kicked a can from the top of the riverbank, which hit Kouichi who was down below. She rushed down to apologize but tripped and fell and had to be helped up by Kouichi. She asks whether Kouichi remembers this and he replies that he doesn’t. Disappointed that he doesn’t remember, she tells him that he should at least pretend to remember before she dies. Kouichi says her name, but before he can say anything else, an explosion occurs. The building buries Izumi in the rubble, as Kouichi and Mei escape.

2. Yukari Sakugari

Cause of death: Impaled by the throat from her umbrella after slipping from the stairs and drowning in her blood.

This is hands down the most painful and most creative death in the entire anime. She’s also the first person to die.

When Yukari’s mother was killed in a car accident, she got taken out of class so she could pay her respects. A distraught Yukari fled, only to see Mei and Kouichi standing near the stairwell and talking. Realizing her mother had been killed as a result of the curse and fearing being close to Mei would cause her to follow suit, Yukari panicked and fled in the opposite direction, a confused and concerned Kouichi in tow. Yukari rushed down the stairs but tripped and dropped her umbrella. She fell down the stairs, landing face-first on the umbrella, impaling her jugular on the tip. Kouichi watched in horror as his friend drowned in her bodily fluids, her blood pooling around her body. Devastating. After watching this death, you will NEVER look at an umbrella the same way ever again. In fact, throw away all of your umbrellas after watching this.

1. Shoji Kubodera

Cause of death: Committed suicide in front of his class by stabbing himself in the neck with a knife

Really, dude? Right in front of the children? This anime seems to have a fetish for impaling throats. Finally, at #1, we have what is probably the most infamous death of the entire anime. Do I even need to explain this one?

Finally, let’s look at all of the deaths in the anime in all of their gory glory. Happy Halloween!
